Why Color Theory

Why is my book called "Color Theory for Printing" rather than "Color Science for Printing"?

Interestingly, early drafts of the book were actually titled Color Science for Printing.

In everyday conversation, people often use the word theory to mean a guess or opinion. In science, however, a theory is something very different. A scientific theory is a well-established explanation that helps us understand observations and predict outcomes.

Color science provides the foundation. It explains how light, materials, and human vision interact.

Color theory helps us apply that science to practical decisions in design, prepress, printing, and quality control.

The title may say theory, but every concept in the book is grounded in measurable, repeatable, and well-established color science.

After all, the goal is not simply to understand color science. The goal is to use that understanding to achieve more consistent and repeatable color in production.
